Echinacea is believed by many people to stimulate the immune system. The plant is used externally for wounds, burns, and insect bites, chewing of roots for toothache and throat infections; internal application is used for pain, cough, stomach cramps and even snake bites.
We have personally tried and tested Echinaforce from A.Vogel. It works better than other echinacea products. This should be a staple in your herbal cabinet. Whenever you feel that a bug “got you” take it straight away and you can often stop a cold from developing.
Echinacea – the “antibiotic of the herbalist” – should only be taken for a maximum of two weeks at any time, otherwise it looses effect. It should not be used as a “preventer”.
Note: Research studies have shown that Echinacea purpurea juice extract is safe in children 2–11 years when used up to 10 days. 7% experienced a rash after taking echinacea, which suggested an allergic reaction. There is concern that the allergic reaction could be more severe in children. The European Herbal Medicinal Products Committee (HMPC) and the UK Herbal Medicines Advisory Committee (HMAC) recommended against the use of echinacea containing products in children under the age of 12.
If you take any prescription medication or suffer from a chronic health condition, Echinacea might be contraindicated for you. If in doubt, please ask your pharmacist or GP. Of course you can also contact us for advice.
